Tegan and Sara are back with a new, fun video for their single “Boyfriend.” The twin duo delivers in the catchy clip with celebrity cameos and relatable love triangle lyrics. You’re gonna love Tegan and Sara’s latest video.
The Canadian sisters take us “behind the scenes” in the clip, shooting a cliche music video within the video. The out rockers croon in front of various green screen scenarios and look super hot in black leather jackets. Tegan and Sara shift through celebrity cameos from designer Rachel Antonoff, Sarah Ramos, and Mae Whitman, wind machines, silly props, and dance breaks. There’s even some shots with cute puppies. All the while, the “Closer” singers keep their earnest performances up as they sing about a secret affair that tugs at their hearts and consciences.
“Boyfriend” is the first single off their new album, Love You to Death, dropping June 3rd. The video was directed by actress Clea DuVall, who ardent queer indie cinema fans may remember from But I’m A Cheerleader.
Sara Quin expanded on the lyrics to “Boyfriend,” telling Beats 1 the song is about being the third point of a love triangle. “I think that’s pretty relatable,” she reasoned. “Obviously, being gay, there’s sort of a bit of a gender twist in the song, and I get that that sometimes doesn’t seem immediately relatable to everybody, whether they’re straight or whatever. But this idea, you know, that we’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official, and they’re not ready, that’s what the song is about.”
Twins Tegan and Sara will also undertake a major North American headlining tour to support the new pop album, Love You To Death. It all gets underway with a concert in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on September 9th. Tegan and Sara continue their philanthropic and activist streak by donating one dollar from every ticket to charitable organizations via Plus One.
